Awinter picnic is the perfect budget-friendly activity that keeps kids entertained during cold weather months. Planning a family winter picnic is easy, and you can even have one in your own yard! Here are some ideas to use as you plan a winter picnic that’s sure to create lifelong memories.

How to Set Up a Cozy Winter Picnic (What to Bring and How to Use It)

The exact supplies you’ll need for a winter picnic depend on where you’re going. A picnic in your own yard usually takes less planning than one at a nearby park, but either way, thinking through your setup ahead of time makes everything easier.

Here’s how to build a simple, comfortable winter picnic setup for your family.

1. Seating and Eating Area

In cold weather, sitting directly on the ground isn’t always practical, especially if there’s snow or damp grass. Instead, focus on creating a small, raised eating area.

Options that work well include:

This setup keeps everyone off the cold ground and makes eating much more comfortable.

2. Food and Drink Setup

Keeping food and drinks warm is one of the biggest challenges of a winter picnic, so insulated containers are key.

Helpful items include:

  • Insulated lunch bags or soft coolers

  • A rolling cooler for larger outings

  • A vacuum-insulated bottle for hot cocoa or soup

  • Reusable mugs for serving drinks

I prefer insulated bags because they’re easier to carry, but a wheeled cooler is a great option if you’re bringing more food.

3. Activity Gear

Once you’ve planned seating and food, think about what your kids will do while you’re outside.

Depending on the weather and location, you might bring:

  • A sled for snowy parks

  • Sandcastle toys for snow play

  • Binoculars for wildlife watching

  • Simple outdoor games

These small additions help turn a short picnic into a longer, more memorable outing.

4. Staying Warm and Comfortable

Warmth is what makes or breaks a winter picnic, especially with younger kids.

Be sure to pack:

  • Extra blankets

  • Spare gloves and hats

  • Dry socks if snow is involved

  • Hand warmers for added warmth

Having backups makes it easy to swap out wet gear and stay comfortable longer.

Winter Picnic Activities

Whether there’s snow on the ground or not, there are lots of great outdoor activities you can plan for your family’s winter picnic, and you don’t even have to bring a lot of gear with you to have fun!

Snow Castle Building

As mentioned above, sandcastle toys are perfect for building with snow too. Challenge your kids to create fun snow castles using these toys and see what creative designs they’re inspired to make. This activity is great for when there’s some snow, but not quite enough to build large snowmen. You can even bring along some bottles of food coloring to add bright hues to the castles. For even more snow castle building fun, consider a snow mold kit.

Winter Scavenger Hunt

A winter scavenger hunt is perfect for picnics at the park or in your yard. The lists should be filled with simple things your kids are likely to see in the winter, such as squirrels, bird’s nests, and even winter birds. If you don’t want to create your own scavenger hunt lists, consider these free printables from Jolly Festive. Be sure to bring crayons or makers along too so everyone can fill out their sheets as they spot items from the list.

Marshmallow Stacking Contest

If you’re already bringing everything needed for soothing cups of hot cocoa, consider having a marshmallow stacking contest after your meal. For this activity, you’ll need bags of large marshmallows and a flat surface. The goal is to stack as many marshmallows as possible without having them fall down. Kids can be creative with their designs, such as making pyramids similar to a house of cards. The marshmallows do not need to be in a single tower, so make sure they know there are no real rules except that the marshmallows can’t fall down.

Painting the Snow

Of course, food coloring and snow are great ingredients for lots of activities. Painting the snow lets kids channel their artistic sides without having to dig their hands in the snow. Plastic squirt bottles, water, and food coloring are all that are needed to set up this activity. There are also snow painting kits available for purchase online as well.

Winter Story Time

If you’re planning a picnic in your yard, winter story time with everyone gathered around an outdoor firepit is a cozy activity that brings the family together. Once everyone has a cup of hot chocolate and a blanket ready, have them sit down and listen to a story you tell. You can also set up a Bluetooth speaker and play an audio book if you want to keep your hands wrapped around a cup of hot chocolate too. You can sign up for an Audible audio book subscription for access to lots of great book titles you can enjoy on your picnic or whenever you want to hear a good story.

Foods for a Family Winter Picnic

You can make your picnic meal as simple or fancy as you like. Cheese and crackers served with hot chocolate make a simple snack everyone can enjoy, and soup or stew will help you stay warm on a cold day. There are lots of different meal ideas to choose from, but I personally love some of the suggestions from We’re Going on an Adventure.

There are lots of hot food options you can serve in Thermos Funtainer food jars, which come with folding spoons. These are great because they can also be used for lunches when the kids go back to school after winter break. Some additional winter picnic food options you can keep in these insulated containers include:

  • Chicken Nuggets

  • Mac n Cheese

  • Buttered Noodles

  • Spaghetti

  • Oatmeal

  • Chicken Noodle Soup

Remember that the picnic doesn’t have to be a whole meal. If you only pack everyone’s favorite snacks, it’s still a picnic and you don’t have to cook anything!

When planning your family’s picnic, be sure to come up with a time limit for the event. This will allow everyone to have fun while still protecting against exposure to extreme temperatures. Simply planning the meal and one or two short activities is all you really need to make this family activity a fun one for everyone. And don’t forget to take lots of pictures so you can add them to your scrapbook for the year!
