A backyard water balloon party can be great for a budget-friendly birthday celebration or a group play date. It gives everyone a chance to cool off from the humid summer weather and make new friends too. Many of the games are great for kids or adults, making this idea great for any summer gathering. Best of all, a backyard water balloon party doesn’t take a lot of planning.

Planning a backyard water balloon party is easy, and the supplies won’t break the bank. Some reusable water balloons, a hose, and a few buckets are all you really need to get started. Here are some tips you can use to host a day of epic water balloon games.

What You’ll Need for Backyard Water Balloon Games

There are lots of options available, from the Bunch-o-Balloon packs that let you fill dozens of small balloons at a time to environmentally friendly reusable water balloons. Personally, I prefer the reusable type to prevent a mess after the party, but you should use whatever you think works best for you. In addition to an assortment of water balloons, you’ll need the following:

You can also mix things up by purchasing mini water shooters or asking kids to bring their favorite Super Soakers to the party too. The great thing about the items on this list is that they’re reusable, so after your initial investment, you can host regular backyard water balloon parties without spending much money at all.

The Classic Water Balloon Toss

The easiest of all the games to set up, the water balloon toss is easy for kids of all ages. Choose a distance that makes sense for the age group you’re entertaining and have everyone get into two lines. Once in place, the kids simply toss the water balloons back and forth until one pops.

Each time a balloon pops, the pair throwing and catching is eliminated from the game. Play until there’s just one team of two left standing. You can also modify this game to have one person designated as the thrower for each round, challenging them to get as many people out as possible within a certain amount of time.

Water Balloon Pinata

For the water balloon pinata, you’ll need traditional balloons and not the reusable bombs. Simply fill a few with water and tie them to a tree or post in your yard. Use a handkerchief or towel as a blindfold, spin each player around three times, and set them loose to take a swing at the balloons. There won’t be any prizes that fall out, but the kids who break the water balloon pinata will make a big splash!

Hot Potato Water Balloon Splash Game

The traditional game of hot potato plus water balloons equals one of the best backyard water balloon games around! To play the hot potato splash game, you’ll want to queue up a song on your waterproof Bluetooth speaker and grab one water balloon.

The kids simply toss the balloon from one person to the next until it pops or until the water stops. The person who has the balloon when it bursts or when the music stops sits out for the round. Continue the game until they’re just one player left. You can increase the difficulty of the hot potato splash game by introducing one more balloon with each round.

Water Balloon Spoon Race

For the water balloon spoon race, you’ll need one balloon for each team, the plastic serving spoons, and your playground-style traffic cones.

Set up three lines of cones; one for the starting line, one for the midway point, and one for the end. You’ll have one child stand at the starting line and another at the midway point for each team, and everyone will need a spoon. Hand each person at the starting line a balloon on it.

They’ll need to race to the next player on their team and successfully transfer the balloon from their spoon to the next player’s spoon. The second kid on each team will then race to the finish line.

Simplified Water Balloon Race

If you don’t have enough players to make for the spoon relay race, you can just do teams of one and have them run in a circle around the cone at the midway point of the race course to make the game a little more challenging. It’s a simple water balloon race that can still be lots of fun for everyone.

Epic Water Balloon Fight

In my experience, your little partygoers might tire of planned games and instead opt for an epic water balloon fight instead. Just be sure to have plenty of buckets throughout the yard so they can grab water balloons as they run around.

The adults supervising the party can act as official balloon fillers using a wading pool filled with water or the extra-long garden hose. The wading pool also comes in handy if you have water squirters or Super Soakers on hand. The epic water balloon fight is a great way to end the party, as kids can just keep playing until their parents arrive to bring them home.

Helpful Backyard Water Balloon Party Tips

Be sure to have refreshments on hand for your party guests. I like to keep a cooler filled with Gatorade, juice boxes, and water handy to keep everyone cool and hydrated. Popsicles and ice cream make great treats, especially if you’re hosting a birthday party.

Don’t forget to ask parents to pack towels and water shoes for the day. Let them know you’ll be hosting water balloon games so they can send their little ones in swimming suits and send along a change of clothes.

If you are hosting a birthday party, consider giving out beach towels as party favors instead of goody bags. You can let parents know towels will be provided and you won’t have to stress about finding lots of little gifts to send home with your party guests.
